So what did we submit that impressed the Judges so much?

Yay We Won! – Here’s what the Judge’s had to say!

Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the FMB, said: “This is a truly unique kitchen extension and a clear winner. You can see that the team has gone above and beyond the brief to deliver a stunning room that all the family adores.”

So what did we submit that impressed the Judges so much?
Back in January of this year we submitted an entry into the Federation of Master Builders Awards; they are our national governing body and so it was a big deal for us to enter. They select the best of the best from across the whole of the UK over x regions. We had had some excellent clients that year and were hopeful of a win!

Roll forward to the regional awards night for London and Southern Counties and we were absolutely delighted to be announced winners of London and Southern Counties Best Kitchen Project 2019.Winning the regional level meant we were automatically submitted to the national awards held in September. We were over the moon to win that too!

The Project we submitted for Best Kitchen Project was a complete home renovation we undertook for a client with a Victorian terrace house in Chiswick, London.

Below is a snapshot of the information we submitted to the Judges.

Our Design Process

Our design is always a collaborative effort with our clients, from the initial brief to the final plans and drawings, and the objective is always to create a home our clients truly love, which reflects who they are, stands up to the rigours of daily life and has somewhere for their possessions. Designing something beautiful isn’t enough for us, it has to be beautifully useful too. In this instance, Raki’s initial visit highlighted the opportunity to remodel the ground floor, maximising the use of the garden to create a much larger kitchen and entertaining space.

Following the first site meeting, initial drawings were created and approved by the client. From these, architectural plans were drawn up and planning permission sought and granted. The time while waiting for planning approval was used to discuss and agree some interior design features. While the structural work commenced, a full CAD view of the project was prepared and approved before build work on the interior components began.

Overcoming Obstacles

Renovating terraced properties comes with a unique set of challenges and this project was no different, we;

  • used a trusted party wall specialist to help gain party wall consent with a housing association neighbour,
  • had to close the road twice to allow materials to be craned over from the front to back of the house,
  • needed to scaffold over the roof of the house to access the rear.

All the time maintaining excellent relationships with the neighbours and the local council.

Special Features

The Victorian terrace has a very small garden, the design challenge of making the entertainment and garden space of the kitchen appear as large light and airy as possible was solved by a pillar-less extension, a first for RMR homes. The end result is a kitchen space that delivers practical and stylish entertainment options, enlarging both the indoors and outdoors simultaneously.
